Lieutenant Richard Bate died of wounds inflicted during operations in the Waspik sector of the Maas River front. Son of John O. and Edith J. Bate, of Pretoria, Transvaal, South Africa.
41RM Commando had been ordered to maintain forward positions on the small island of Kapelsche Veer which lies between the River Maas and the River Oudermaas. Both he, and Corporal Joseph McKenna, had been badly wounded during a river landing and had to be left behind when his patrol withdrew with other casualties. Lieutenant Bate died in a German hospital in Werkendam whilst a prisoner of war.

Notes
There was an emergency hospital (German) in Werkendam where the wounded were cared for, and those who died there are buried in the village cemetery.
