Lance Corporal Stanley Rothwell died from injuries received when a grenade accidentally exploded.
Extract from the Dundee Evening Telegraph
A verdict of accidental death was returned by the Brighton Coroner, Mr Charles Webb, at the inquest today on L/Cpl. Stanley Rothwell (23), single, of Heaton Street, Heaton Park, Prestwich, Manchester, who was injured while detonating an unexploded hand grenade.
Following an exercise an unexploded grenade was found, and on Saturday Sergeant William James went with Rothwell to explode it.
Rothwell asked the Sergeant to leave as the rule was that only one man should be near the grenade. He had only got three yards when there was an explosion. "I had my back to the grenade and was staggered by the blast but escaped injury," said James.
Lieut. Gilbert Fazan said Rothwell might have stumbled when bending down and so disturbed the grenade.
