Lance Corporal Joseph Barker was reported missing 23 March 1945, later confirmed killed in action in Western Europe. His Commando were engaged in the crossing of the River Rhine at Wesel. He had previously been wounded on 10 July 1944 at Le Plein, Normandy.
Extract from the Hampshire Telegraph 27 April 1945
"Mr. F.T. Barker, 36 Reginald Road, Eastney, has received official information that his youngest son, Acting Lance Corporal Joseph Walter Barker, The Buffs, who was posted missing on March 23 in Western Europe, has been killed in action. He was 24."
