Sergeant Ernest Robert Villiers, birth name Egon Vogel, was of the Jewish Faith and died during operations at the River Rhine crossing. He served  under an alias of Ernest Robert Villiers in 3 troop, also known as  'X' troop, of No.10 Inter Allied Commando but was attached at the time of his death to 46RM Commando. The previous year on 23 June 1944 he had been wounded during operations at the Sallenelles. 
Egon Vogel was a refugee from Germany and not initially interned. Civil occupation - Trainee Plater (Engineer). Resided in 1939 with Leonard Hurrell (a Metropolitan Police Officer) and his wife Margarita Hurrell of 100 Sutton Court Road, Chiswick, W4. In 1940 Egon, along with many others, was classed as an enemy alien and interned, then transported to Australia on the S.S. Dunera 10 July 1940 (Dunera Boys). Returned to the UK on the S.S. Ceramic 21 December 1941. Joined the Pioneer Corps initially before volunteering for the Commandos and assuming the alias of Ernest Robert Villiers.
