Justin Szarkow served in 2 troop. First born of a Polish immigrant family (early 1900s) and was born and raised in Manchester. His father was killed in action in WW1 *. In 1956, he changed the family name of Szarkow to Gibbs to honour his step father. Although all military records will have him as Szarkow, the Association will, therefore, now know him as Justin Gibbs. He died, aged 96, in 2012. He was fiercely patriotic to his death and was proud to have been a Commando. (Source: His daughter Pauline Hajok.) * 53491 Private S. Szarkow, 1st/8th Bn. Middlesex Regiment died on the 24th August 1918 and is remembered with honour at Douchy-Les-Ayette British Cemetery. ( Source: CWGC.)
