At the time of his death men from his Commando had taken part in a raid near Boulogne codenamed Operation Bristle [view]. A newspaper report in the Dundee Evening Telegraph titled Diary of the War states " Thursday June 4 - Commandos landed near Boulogne and gained valuable information."
