No. 8 Army Commando

No. 8 was formed on 23rd June 1940 and reached full strength in September at Burnham-On-Crouch in Essex.
Recruits from Combemere Barracks in Windsor under Capt Geoffrey Nicholson and Randolph Churchill later joined the Commando from Guards regiments.

Joining No’s 7 and 11 Commando for training at Inverary and Largs the Commando eventually sailed for the Middle East.
Under LtCol. D.R. Daley it became ‘B’ Batallion of Layforce but saw little action and was eventually disbanded along with other Commando units in the area.

Many officers and men from this Commando immediately volunteered to join a new Special Service unit. The Special Air Service. S.A.S.
