Formed on the 23rd June 1940 reaching full strength in September at Burnham on Crouch, Essex. Recruits from Combemere Barracks in Windsor under Capt. Geoffrey Nicholson and Randolph Churchill later joined the Commando from the Guards Regiments. Joining No's 7 and 11 Cdo. for training at Largs and Inverary, the Commando eventually sailed for the Middle East.It became "B" Btn. of Layforce but was eventually disbanded many of its officers and men volunteering to join a new special service unit - the SAS.
