During the run-up to D-Day, Commandant Kieffer formed a K-gun Troop (Heavy Weapons Troop) with four K-guns [Vickers GO .303 rapid-firing machine gun] that Lt Col Dawson [CO No4 Cdo] had 'given' him. Originally designed by Vickers for use on aircraft, Commandos used the K-Gun in an infantry support role/squad automatic weapon briefly around D-Day.

Badge 177 - Francis Hyacinthe Auguste Guezennec
Date: 02/07/2009
The original Cap badge was designed by Cpl Maurice Chauvet.
The early versions had an anchor on the left of the scroll and a star on the right, the later design 'dropped' the star in favour of two anchors.
The badges were individually numbered, Kieffer had #1, G Vourch had #2. This badge, #177, was issued to Francis Guezenner but was lost and replaced with # 310.
Not many badges still exist; the French Commandos had a habit of giving them to the young French girls...

Abbé René Paulin de NAUROIS, MC, Aumonier, HQ Section
Date: 11/10/2007
Father (Captain) René de Naurois was the French Troops' Padre (Aumonier).
Abbé René became involved with smuggling Jews from France across the border into Spain. He provided false papers and refuge to those needing assistance and hid Jewish families in the mountains and in Catholic institutions.
In 1941, Abbé de Naurois joined the Resistance and fought with a number of Jewish resistance fighters. He was also outspoken against the Vichy Government.
Wanted by the Gestapo, he fled France in 1942.
He joined the Free French Naval Forces and, although in poor health, he asked to join the commandos as chaplain,
He was assigned to French Troops, No10 (IA)Cdo and was among the 177 French Commandos who took part in the D-Day Landings.
When the Troops' Medical Officer (Capt R Lion) was KIA, Abbé René voluntarily took over as MO.
Abbé René de NAUROIS passed away, aged 99, on 12 January 2006 and was buried, in the cemetery at Ranville, along with his fellow Commandos, according to his wishes.
