Hello,

I have carried some research into No. 9 Commando and have a record of a 14359667 Cpl G. Campbell of 5 Troop (late of the Buffs). I appreciate that there is no evidence that this is the person you are looking for, but it may help. Perhaps you already know that the Commandos were raised in June and July 1940, but disbanded in November 1940, only to be raised again in March 1941. This may explain why George Campbell would have been with both No. 3 and No.9.

Good luck with your research.
Neil
Hello,

Thanks for this interesting post, if I had known, I might well have travelled down to Anzio myself...!

In fact, I will be in Anzio from 17-20 March 2007, to commemorate the 63rd anniversary of the death of my Uncle, Captain David Balls, 9 Commando, who was killed in the wadis north of Anzio on Operation X (19 March 1944). I have managed to locate the exact place where he was killed, as well as the time, and plan to be in the right spot at the right moment. Like most killed with him that day (23 in all) he has no known grave.

I also plan to re-visit the cemeteries and various other places, such as The Boot, the Pantano Ditch and the Factory and perhaps the landing beach.

I'm not sure where you all live, but if there are any of you actually in Anzio, it would be great to meet up. I will be staying at La Tavernetta, Via Catalina 7 (tel. 06 984 6104) from Saturday 17 March until Tuesday 20 March 2007. I plan to be out and about during the day, but you can leave a message. Or e-mail me: [email protected].

Look forward to hearing from you,
Best regards
Neil

I have a record of a Rifleman L. IVES of the LIR (London Irish Rifles?) Army Army number 878121, who was a member of 6 Troop, No. 9 Commando in 1945. I don't know when he joined up. I hope this gives you a bit of a start...!
I joined last year, but have just registered here. I am currently trying to find out as much as I can about the members of No. 9 Commando (1941-45) and would be grateful if any member of this fine unit, or a relative, would get in touch. I am particularly interested in Operation Ornito (1-4 February 1944) and Operation X (19 March 1944) and 3 (Heavy Weapons) Troop. I would be particularly interested in hearing from anyone who knew Ronnie Tod CBE DSO*, David Balls, Harry Kither MC, Paul Francis Bassett-Wilson MC, Leonard Coupe, Leslie Callf MC*, Harry Lucas, Mike Allen MC, G.E. MacDougall-Porter, A.W. Templeton.

I'm also interested in the Independent Companies, particularly No. 1 Independent Company.

For those who can help re the above, thanks in advance, for the rest, I look forward to seeing what what kind of discussions come up on this forum...!
