Hello to all.

My name is Judi Kemp. I live in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

My father, Lt. Michael John Scovell, No. 3 Commando, Troop 2, Motor Transport served in the British Army and was at Dieppe, North Africa, Italy and at Normandy, Sword Beach on D-Day. He was also in Brigadier-General Peter Young's private army.

Sadly, he died in March of 2002 at the age of 82.

I would like to know if anyone remembers him. I have also been in contact with Nick Birkinshaw who's Grandfather, Harold Hughes, we think knew my father while they were with No. 3 Cdo.

Also, Nick has mentioned John Carney, who might have know my Dad.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Warm regards,
Judi Kemp

Hi Judi and welcome to the CVA. I do hope you get a reply from someone who may have known your father. I would just say that some members may be travelling to this weekends events at the National Arboretum in Alrewas for the Commando Summer Service so there may be a delay. I see you have posted a photo of your father on a separate message. I have reposted it here as its best to keep everything together. I have also sent you a private message.

Regards

Hi Pete,

I received your message this morning, that was very kind of you to put my Dad's photograph where it was supposed to be, thank you very much. I couldn't manage to insert it so put it in separately !

This is all very exciting for me, I'm glad there are still Commando's from No. 3 and others still with us. My Dad would have been absolutely fascinated with this and could have contributed alot of information.

I do hope someone will recognize him, that would be wonderful and my Mum would be very interested. She remembers names but not faces so will go through old photographs that she has to refresh her memory.

Again, thank you very much and hope to hear from you again.

Warm regards,
Judi Kemp

Hi Judi,

These are some extracts from the War Diary concerning Normandy which mention your father:

2nd August 1944

1330 - Artillery shoot in farm. C.O. to HQ 6 Airborne Div with Sjt Denham (MM) and Sjt Scovell. Interview regarding Immediate Commissions.

30th August 1944

1100 - COs. parade - informed Cdo of position that it would not be returning to ENGLAND, but if possible it would continue the campaign here. Explained it was really a choice of here or BURMA, and he for one preferred here. Sgt. Denham, (4 Troop) Commissioned and posted to 4 Troop. Sgt. Scovell, (HQ) Commissioned and takes over M.T.O.

6th September 1944

1400 - No chance of move until evening. Vehicle party moved off under Lt Scovell.

I have more unpublished photographs which feature your father. I'm guessing your mother already has this photograph which includes Peter Young etc. When you dig the photograph out below it should say on the back East Grinstead.

I see that Scovells regimental number in the RASC was T/6140982 Officers number was 329366.

Hi there,

Thank you very much for this information and photo of my Dad, Lt. Michael John Scovell.

You mentioned that you have some more unpublished photos of him. Would it be possible for you to send them to me, it would be most appreciated.

How do I go about obtaining his Service Records ?

Hope to hear from you again soon.

Warm regards,

Judi Kemp
