In 1946 the Army Council decided that the Army Commandos were to be disbanded and no provision was allowed or made for any depository or office which would have at least contained a complete Roster of Names of the men who served in the various units.
For historical & research purposes, I have tried to compile the names of all No.5 Commando volunteers which were obtained from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Lists of Casualties, the No.5 Commando War Diary, papers from the National Archives and further research by the National Secretary and fellow members of the CVA and various other resources.

In preparing this list, I acknowledge that it is very likely there are omissions, Therefore, this is not a definitive list by any means, nor is it meant to be an official list, but it is the best I can do in an attempt to record all ranks by name who were part of No.5 Commando.
Research continues.
Everyone deserves to be remembered!

We will remember them.

I hope that the list may help someone trying to trace a relative...

There are only over 600 names (?) here and, unfortunately, there may well be duplicates:

for example:
....... Robert Smith 5 Trp
L/Cpl ......... Smith 2 Trp
,,,,,,, Bob Smith

[All three entries may be one and the same; Robert Smith from 5 Trp may well be the same person as L/Cpl Smith from 2 Trp - quite often commandos were transferred from one troop to another, especially on promotion - but I have entered any references as I found them.]

There are probably misspelt names (again I have copied the references faithfully).

I have gathered some of the names from the CVA forum - if someone has claimed that their relative was in No5, I have added that name to the list.

Still loads of names to find if you consider, for instance, that 27 Officers and 430 men of No5 Cdo set sail from Gournock in Nov 1943 heading for India...

PLEASE NOTE: As it is a pdf file you will need to open it in Adobe Reader or similar pdf reader.

The most recent amendments will be shown in red

Nominal Roll updated 15 November 09.

There are now a little over 600 names on the No5 Commando list...

Our National Secretary (Geoff Murray) has also been busy compiling 'They Also Served' lists (for all the Commandos) and he was good enough to allow me to amalgamate our two No5 Cdo lists.

Please pm me if you come across any 'new' names.
