Hello all - I'm trying to locate a photo which i'm pretty sure Pete (Rogers) posted on this forum - here it is and shows my father l/cpl EAG Cant No 2 - 4 troop in Italy . I'm sure its here some where , just can't locate it! Dad was part of the Police intake. Any help grateful or maybe it should be re-posted but not sure where. (under 4 troop maybe)

Hi Mike
I think this is the post you may be looking for...although the photos no longer seem to be displaying. I will try and amend this. The photo as I said when I posted it is unusual as there don't appear to be any Commando insignia and the men are all wearing ties. I wonder could it have been something to do with his Officer Training as mentioned in the original message. That would make sense with the ties.

Additional thought is that the brick building does not look Italian

Could just be late war picture? A collared shirt and tie was introduced for ORs in late 44, although you didn't see it in use much until well into 1945. Some of the officers in the front row have got pips on their shoulders so maybe the rest are ORs although they do seem to have an air of Officers about them!

It could well be, its too small a number of men to be a Troop photo, but could be a section photo?!

Mikey - In the living years, indeed. So many of us would love the chance to talk with them once more. Hope you find the information you're looking for.

Keep posting - I'm sure further promotion is not far away Dad started as a L/Cpl (but he was a policeman) !! how does that work then ? ended as 2nd Lieu. Something to do with chickens maybe ?
L/Cpl. W. Cant
Police Constable Cant arrived from Achnacarry in May, 1942 as part of the wonderful Police Intake who had no previous military training prior to attending Col. Charlie Vaughan?s school. Our ?cops? settled in very fast and not one of them had any problem becoming valued Commando soldiers. Everyone addressed Bill Cant as ?P.C.? thereafter. The boys from the London Police used to tease ?P.C.? about being from a rural Essex constabulary, with references to the famous case of two runaway chickens when they had to ask ?The Yard? for help. ?P.C.? fought well and became an obvious leader in seven ?No. 2? operations resulting in him receiving his Lieutenants ?pips? in 1944. ?P.C.? survived the war and presumably went back to the still-unsolved chicken case in Essex.

I've read in a few books that the Police intake was much appreciated - fine lads :)
I thought Lieutenants had more to do with pigeons ... hey, you've got me chatting in the wrong Forum again ;)

I would refer anyone interested in Police Intakes to the attached thread on this CVA Forum. I hope this helps. You will see that I have put on a reciprocal link to this thread too.
