Dear Friends,

There exists a khaki version of the ww2 commando brigades formation sign, see attached. The usual common version being black/navy blue.

There have been some theories that the khaki version would have been to distinct the army commandos from the royal marines commandos or even that it could be a manufacturers error.

I have not seen the khaki version worn on ww2 pictures yet.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Best regards,
JB

Thanks John,

Remains a mystery, may be it was never introduced or a mistake of the tailors as suggested. It definitely has the looks of a ww2 era badge.

The renowned auction house Bosleys military auctioneers also refer to these badges as ww2 army commando.

May be a veteran might remember?

One day something will surface.

A couple of suggestions. Perhaps it was a sample design that was never taken up or it has been bleached in the wash and the background material has changed colour but the thread used in the FS knife, being of a different material has not.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your comments. I do not believe that the background material has changed. I have two examples and seen others as well, it is khaki serge material.

I have seen bleaching by the sun of printed black/red commando badges turning to beige like the attached combined ops badge though.

Best regards,

JB
