Hi JB,
No5 definately wore a yellow hackle in the early years but the wearing of the hackle was discontinued as they were too fragile.
My belief is that they were dropped from use when the berets were introduced - perhaps someone can confirm that?

my dad has one on his Balmoral Bonnet but none when he's wearing the beret. Think your right mate

I found this Pic somewhere on forum.
The 9 cdo here wears also on his green beret a black hackle.
And superb 5 cdo pic from somewhere on forum of Arthur Warnes.

Hi JB,
thanks for the photo of the No5 Hackle - I don't expect there's many of those still in existence!
The two portraits, you also included, can be found in the respective albums in the Gallery.
The early photo of Arthur Warnes shows him wearing a 'Tam' (Tam o' Shanter) with hackle which still bears out my theory - that No5 Cdo discontinued wearing hackles when the beret was introduced.
