On the 19th March 1944 - 66 years ago - Captain David Gavin Balls of 3 troop was killed in the action at the Haydon Wadi at Anzio. This fateful day was also his 24th birthday. I contacted his nephew Neil Livingstone and he has kindly supplied some photos and information on 3 troop and his uncle. I have cropped a picture of his uncle from one of the photos of 3 troop that Neil sent. We had copies of these photos but one was badly damaged and the other not particularly clear so I have replaced them in the No.9 Commando album of Troop Photos with these excellent quality pictures.

Here is the link to photo of Captain David Balls and the information supllied by Neil:

I have attached the picture to this forum message and also a more recent picture taken by Neil of the Haydon Wadi where David and so many of his 9 Commando comrades fell

Neil added these words " This Friday, 19 March, would have been David's 90th birthday, so the family will be aware of this milestone... However, unlike the rest of us, David will forever be 24. "

We will remember them
