Gnr. Charles Dettmer was injured in the same mortar explosion that killed Lieut. Arthur Brunswick of No.2 Cdo. This occurred on the 13th September 1943 at Dragone Hill, Salerno. Sadly I do not as yet have a photo of Gnr. Dettmer but I do have this information kindly provided to me by Eric Buckmaster of 5 troop No.2 Cdo " Gnr. Charles Dettmer was in HQ Troop, Intelligence Section, and the fact that Tiny Burke attended Lt Brunswick means that they were operating in the vicinity of 5 Troop. Charles Dettmer, subsequently lost an arm to Mortar Fire in that action. Post War he was a newspaper reporter, and later he owned a Local Newspaper. Unfortunately he died rather suddenly only last year."

Thanks Eric for that information. here is a link to the Times Obituary for Charles Dettmer:

God and the Soldier, all men adore, In time of danger and not before.
When the danger is passed and all things righted, God is forgotten, and the Soldier slighted.
