Achnacarry

The Commando Basic Training centre during the second world war was Achnacarry house affectionately known as ‘Achnacarry Castle’ or’ Castle Commando’.

Between 1942-45 British.French, Belgian, American, Dutch and Norwegian soldiers would undertake the basic training course for the right to wear the coveted Green Beret. Nearly 25,000 servicemen passed through ‘The Castle’ under the watchful eye of LtCol Charles Vaughan.

Although it as long since returned to its former status as the seat of the Clan Cameron it is regarded worldwide as the historical and spiritual home of the Commandos.
