FOSTER, William Johnstone

Sergeant William Foster was taken prisoner of war and executed whilst serving with the 2nd Special Air Service Regiment.
  • 27 December 1941 (Bombardier) (No.3 Commando) wounded during the the Vaagso raid.
  • June 1942 (Lance Sergeant) No.3 Commando 4 Troop
  • 18/19 August 1942  embarked at newhaven for the Dieppe raid.

PEASLEY, Edward John

RN Commando
Leading Seaman Edward Peasley, RN Beach Commando 'H', died in a diving accident in Genoa, Italy [1 + 2 + Notes B].
 
He had earlier received a MiD for outstanding services in planning and carrying out an operation in the Arakan in close co-operation with the Army [3].
 
We have a photo of him as a RN Commando serving with 'H', also known as 'HOW', section.  [2 +4]   'How' section operated in both the Arakan in 1944 and Genoa in 1945 [4].

SHORTALL, James Patrick

SAS
Corporal James Shortall was taken prisoner of war and executed whilst serving with the 2nd Special Air Service Regiment.
He had previously served in No.8 Commando in October 1940 and by March 1941 had moved to No.3 Commando. In April 1943 he was posted to 62 Commando SSRF whilst in North Africa which formed the foundation on which 2nd SAS was raised on 13 May.
