Recommendation
On the 4th of October No.2 Troop, commanded by Captain Waldie (K.O.S.B.), was in position around the farm 400 yards North East of the road junction Termoli - Petacciato: Termoli - Guglione. At the time the flank was secured by our own infantry.
At 1500 hours all troops forward of the Unit positions had been withdrawn and the farmhouse occupied by No.2 Troop shelled besides being mortared and machine gunned by tanks which were astride the high ground by the Church 1000 yards forward.
During this period the haystacks were set alight and the position became almost untenable.
Owing to the importance of holding these buildings because of their excellent field of fire and observation the Troop maintained its position until 1700 hours by which time three Mark IV Tanks had moved to the road junction. The fact that the Troop remained steady throughout this trying period was due to Captain Waldie who showed complete disregard for his personal safety when constantly going forward to observe movement of enemy tanks and infantry.
The withdrawal of the Troop was carried out under M.G. fire, with perfect precision. Within five minutes his mortar section were in action again on targets to our left rear. Captain Waldie himself went back to the farmhouse to maintain observation and brought back twice soldiers of another Unit whom he found. When he finally withdrew the force tanks were sitting on the road immediately opposite the farm which was now a mass of flames.
Throughout the three days the Unit was in action Captain Waldie set a superb example of skill and courage.
