1 September 1951 commissioned 2nd Lieutenant.
During his training he served with 40 Commando RM in Malta and the Suez Zone.
April 1955 - 40 Commando RM in Malta and Cyprus.
November 1956 - ITCRM
December 1957 completed a Swimmer Canoeist Officers' Course at Joint Services Amphibious Warfare Centre.
January 1960 - Officer Commanding 2 Special Boat Section.
July 1961 appointed Rifle Company Commander 41 Commando RM in Plymouth.
September 1962 appointed Staff Officer of the Royal Marines Barracks at Eastney.
1965 attended the Army Staff College at Camberley.
January 1966 to Malaya for duty with Headquarters 17 Division as the General Staff Officer 2 (Operations and Training).
31 December 1967 promoted Major.
February 1969 appointed to the Ministry of Defence as the East of Suez Desk Officer in the Directorate of Naval Plans.
April 1970 to Far East appointed Brigade Major 3 Commando Brigade RM.
May 1971 returned to UK with 3 Commando Brigade RM.
February 1972 - Directing Staff of the Army Staff College Camberley.
December 1973 promoted Lieutenant Colonel.
February 1974 Commanding Officer 40 Commando RM with tours of Cyprus and Northern Ireland.
1975 New Years Honours List appointed O.B.E. for distinguished service in Cyprus.
February to July 1976 attended a course at the NATO Defence College in Rome
November 1976 appointed Director of Drafting and Records Royal Marines.
December 1977 promoted Colonel.
April 1979 Commander 3 Commando Brigade RM.
5 February 1981 promoted Major General appointed Chief of Staff to the Commandant General Royal Marines.
24 September 1982 appointed Major General Royal Marines Commando Forces [3].
5 April 1984 promoted Lieutenant General.
6 April 1984 Commandant General Royal Marines.

15 June 1985 appointed K.C.B. (Military Division) *
4 July 1987 to Retired List **
