Acting Colour Sergeant Matthew Tomlinson RM was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross for gallant and distinguished service in Iraq during an attachment to the 3rd Light Armoured Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, United States Marine Corps, in 2005.
Whilst commanding a 16 strong US Marine Corps assault force he engaged a numerically superior enemy. His aggressive action created an element of surprise, unhinged the enemy and enabled a foothold to be established which allowed his patrol to repel a withering attack.
  • 2009 (Warrant Officer Class 2) awarded the Military Cross for gallant and distinguished service. The award was for a tour of duty in Helmand province in Afghanistan when, as a member of 3 Commando Brigade, he braved grenades and gunfire to rescue an injured soldier and retrieve the body of another comrade killed in an explosion.
  • 2010 (Warrant Officer Class 1) awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.
