Private John Farquhar was awarded the Military Medal [1] in recognition of gallant and distinguished services during operations West of the Garigliano River, Italy on the night of 29/30 December 1943 [2].
Recommendation
This man was wounded in the leg during the assault on the demolished bridge position. In spite of this he carried on, attacking the enemy with grenades, and when the enemy ran away he chased them and captured two single handed. He crossed the river unaided and did not disclose the fact that he was wounded until the crossing had been completed [2].

Service number is ident with Pte Farquhar, Seaforth Hldrs. and No.9 Commando, listed on the St. Nazaire Society website as taking part in Operation Chariot 28 March 1942 on motor launch ML443. This was one of launches that returned from the raid. They have his initial as B. The St. Nazaire Society 75th Anniversary Newsletter has a nominal roll and list him with first name Ian and an initial 'B'.
