1 January 1949, Acting Staff Sergeant, awarded the British Empire Medal (Military Division) [1].
1950/1951, Acting Quartermaster Sergeant 41 Independent Commando, Royal Marines, wounded and later awarded the Military Medal for gallant and distinguished service on 29 November 1950 in the Korean War during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir [2][4].
Later Regimental Sergeant Major James Baines, M.M., B.E.M., was awarded the Bronze Star Medal (with Combat Distinguishing Device) bestowed by the President of the United States of America for gallant and distinguished service in operations in Korea [3].
