Gunner McGoldrick from Ashton under Lyne was awarded the Military Medal in recognition of gallant and distinguished service whilst serving as part of the British Expeditionary Force in France. After volunteering for No.3 Commando he took part in Operation Ambassador at Guernsey July 1940. He was reported missing presumed drowned during the raid, but later found to be a prisoner of war.
