Lance Corporal Harry Rose was reported missing and a prisoner of war on 20 April 1941 during operations at Cyrenaica, Libya (Bardia raid). He later made good his escape and received a Mention in Despatches.
Recommendation
Captured at Bardia on 20 April 1941. Sent via Capua and Sulmona to Camp 102 (Aquila). In June 1943 Rose and another prisoner of war attempted to escape from a working party outside Camp 102; they had obtained civilian clothing from the Italian Communist Party who had also arranged to transport them to Rome. They were caught and sent back to camp.
After the Armistice prisoners of war in Camp 102 were taken into the hills by the Italian guards and Rose slipped away in the dark with three other prisoners of war. They made their way south meeting Allied troops near Maddaloni.
