Marine George Taylor died during operations in Italy. At the time of his death his Commando were engaged in fighting at Monte Ornito and Monte Faito, Italy.
He received a Mention in Despatches for "outstanding service while operating with the Allied Armies in Italy."
In a letter home Lance Corporal Roy Montague Smith*, who was himself later killed in action, wrote the following, "George Taylor, one of the three of us, is finished, heard tonight that he was to have had the MM but he was killed so guess he will only be in despatches at least thats what it looks like to me. George did some very good work Tony,
a fine chap, I'd had him with me since Ramsgate".
