Corporal George Ryder 2 Commando
George Ryder, originally from Walton [1], enlisted into the King's Regiment T.A. at Liverpool on 14 December 1938 [2].  Private Ryder volunteered for Special Service and was selected for No.2 Commando. He served with the Commandos during deployments to Gibraltar, Sicily, Italy, Yugoslavia, Albania, and Greece. After the surrender of Japan No.2 Commando, now back in the UK, was disbanded.  George then served for a short period with No. 4 Commando who were in Germany on post war duties until February 1946 when No.4  was itself disbanded. [3].
  • Re-classified as a Signaller on 14 January 1943 [2], 
  • Wounded at Salerno [more....] on 16 September 1943 (this date being that of the action around the village of Piegolelle (or Piegolette) on the hill known as The Pimple), and again during the raid on the enemy held village of Grohote in Solta [more....] on 19 March 1944 [4]
  • George passed away suddenly at his home in New Zealand on the 1st March 1962 [5].

Notes
  • Source @ [1] above records that he was a casulaty at Salerno in 1943, and again in 1944. Confirmed on Army Casualty Lists as being 16/9/43 (rank Pte.) and 19/3/44 (rank LCpl.).
  • CA Newsletter 63 refers to his being with No. 2 Commando (Signals).
