George Francis Clarkson 2 Commando
George Clarkson, a native of Cumbria, was a Police Officer in Crewe who volunteered in 1942 for the Commandos and was part of the Police Intakes to the Commando Depot (Commando Basic Training Centre), Achnacarry. He was attached to No.2 Commando and was serving as a Lance Corporal in the Mortar Section/ Heavy Weapons Troop in January 1943.
25 February 1944 commissioned Second Lieutenant, Border Regiment. Later served in the Far East with the 3rd Nigerian Regiment, Royal West African Frontier Force.
In 1939 George was a Police Constable residing at 29 Ernest Street, Crewe.  After the war he rejoined the Police but resigned in 1950 to take up employment in the clothing trade. George and his wife Florence also ran a gift shop in Edleston Road, Crewe for many years. He was a member of both the Commando Association and Burma Star Association, and Secretary of the Crewe Branch, Royal British Legion.
