Gunner Francis Maude received a Mention in Despatches for distinguished service during Operation Claymore, the raid on the Lofoten Islands Norway, in March 1941. Later in Weymouth he became the batman/runner/minder for Lieutenant Robert Dawson and stayed with him throughout the war, during which time Dawson advanced from Section Officer to Commanding Officer. He was wounded on 19 July 1944 (remaining on duty) during operations at Normandy, France.
