Signalman David Herring, Royal Corps of Signals attached 51st Highland Division Signals, was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in recognition of distinguished service after his capture in France in June 1940 [1].
Over the next two months he managed to escape no less than six times from captivity before being recaptured. His final seventh escape was successful making his way to Spain and onto Gibraltar [1][1a][1b].
He later joined 2 Special Service Brigade Signals Troop and remained in military service after the war completing 22 years with the Colours [2].

The death of Cpl. David W. Herring DCM (2 Bde Sigs) of Ormesby, Teeside, was announced in Commando Association newsletter 110 issued March 2000.
