Private Arthur Hamper was shot and killed when attempting to escape from Stalag 4F whilst a prisoner of war in German hands. He was awarded a posthumous Mention in Despatches in recognition of gallant and distinguished service. He had been reported missing between 25 and 28 February 1941 during operations on the occupied Greek island of Kastellorizo (Operation Abstention), later confirmed to have been taken prisoner of war on 27 February 1941.
