10 Commando Nominal Roll

In 1946 the Army Council decided that the Army Commandos were to be disbanded and no provision was allowed or made for any depository or office which would have at least contained a complete Roster of Names of the men who served in the various units. 

A partial nominal roll for Dieppe

The following list contain the names, ranks and numbers of the officers and men of No4 Commando who participated. It also includes some from No 10 (IA) Commando Free French  and 'X' troop, and others including some US Rangers, who were attached to the Commandos for the raid.
It does not contain those from No 3 Commando and 40RM Commando as no such full list of names has been found. 
 

A speech by Colin Anson No.10(IA) Cdo 3tp

A transcript of a speech by Colin Anson on the 4th September 2007 at the Imperial War Museum about his experience as a member of No 10 (IA) Commando 3 troop. The speech was given by Colin when he attended a reunion of refugees from Nazism who served in the British Forces in WW2. This took place at the Imperial War Museum on 4th September 2007.  In 2010 Colin Anson granted his permission for us to display his speech on our website.

ABRAHAMOWICZ, Richard George

Richard Abrahamowicz was of the Jewish faith and served in 3 troop, also known as 'X' troop,  of the inter allied commando under the alias of Richard Arlen. He was killed assaulting an enemy machine gun position during operations with 45RM Commando at Franceville Plage, Normandy.

ARENSTEIN, Hans

Hans Arenstein served under an alias of Harry Andrews. He was of the Jewish Faith and a member of 3 troop, also known as 'X' troop, of the inter allied commando.  He was attached to 47RM Commando at the time of his death.

nb. The date of death (10th) has been confirmed with the CWGC as being correct.

AUERHAHN, Werner

No 10 Commando
Werner Auerhahn served in 3 troop, also known as 'X' troop, of the inter allied commando under the alias of Peter Vernon Allan WELLS. He was killed by a mine during operations in Italy and was the first casualty of the troop. 
 
Wriiten on the headstone of his grave are the words "He volunteered and died for freedom ever in the loving memory of his parents."

BARTH, George Alexander

George Barth 10 Commando 3 troop
No 10 Commando

George Bryan Barth, an Austrian refugee,  served in 3 troop, also known as  'X' troop, under an alias of Streets. He was killed in a traffic accident whilst on a course at OCTU. He had previously served in 3 troop as a Sergeant.

GLASER, Kurt Joachim

Kurt Joachim Glaser served in 3 troop, also known as  'X' troop, under the name of Keith James Griffith.  He was shot and killed by a sniper during operations with 1 Special Service Bde. to cross a railway bridge over the River Aller near the town of Essel.

GUMPERTZ, Kurt Wilhelm

Kurt Gumpertz died during operations in Normandy with No 4 Commando.  He served in 3 troop, also known as 'X' troop, of the inter allied commando under the alias of Kenneth Graham.

Corporal Ian Harris, born Hans Hajos, attached to No 10 (Inter Allied) Commando 3 troop ('X' troop), was awarded the MM in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in North West Europe.

Captain Bryan Hilton-Jones, No.10 (Inter Allied) Commando, was the commander of 3 troop, also known as 'X' Troop. He was awarded the Military Cross [1] in recognition of gallant and distinguished service during a series of covert operations codenamed Tarbrush along the North coast of France in the middle of May 1944 gathering vital intelligence in preparation for D Day [2]

LANE, George

George Lane, born Lanyi, a Hungarian national of the Jewish Faith had been a freelance journalist before the war and came to England in 1935 aged 20. When war was declared he immediately attempted to join the Grenadier Guards.  After initially being served with a deportation order as a "friendly alien" this order was rescinded and he was permitted to join the Pioneer Corps. Subsequently he joined the Special Operations Executive but later declined to take part in SOE operations in Hungary and was released. From there he joined the Commandos.
 

LENEL, Ernst Richard

No 10 Commando
Ernst Lenel, who was of the Jewish faith, served in 3 troop, also known as 'X' troop, of the inter allied commando under the alias of Ernest Lawrence.  He was reported missing whilst attached to No 3 Commando after a solo intelligence gathering patrol at Amfreville.

LEWINSKY, Max

Max Lewinsky died in a landing craft with Ernest Weinberger [more...] during operations at Normandy on D Day. He served in 3 troop, also known as 'X' troop, of the inter allied commando under the alias of Max Laddy, and was one of their medical orderlies.

Kurt Meyer served under an alias of Peter Moody. He was of the Jewish Faith and a member of 3 troop, also known as 'X' troop, of the inter allied commando. He was killed during operations in Normandy whilst attached to 47RM Commando.

Eric Nathan, who was of the Jewish faith, served in 3 troop, also known as  'X' troop, of the inter allied commando under the alias of Eric William Howarth. He was killed during operations at Osnabruck Germany.

Ernst Nathan, who was of the Jewish faith, served in 3 troop, also known as 'X' troop, of the inter allied commando under the alias of Ernest Norton.  He died during operations at Normandy.

OPPELT, Gustav

Gustav Oppelt was a refugee from Czechoslavakia (Sudeten German) and was killed during operations at Dieppe. For this raid he was attached to 'X' troop, of  No 10.

RICE, C.

No 10 Commando
Pte. Rice served in 3 troop, also known as 'X' troop, of the inter allied commando. There is little known of him apart from a reference in the 10(IA) Commando War Diary for the 19th August 1942 recording the fact that he went on the Dieppe raid and did not return.  We have yet to find an official record of his birth name nor any confirming his death.
 

THEILINGER, Jan or Johan

No 10 Commando
Pte. Theilinger was a Sudetan Czech from Mikolov.  He was baptised a Catholic and later in life could speak numerous languages. He served in the  International Brigade in Spain; the Pioneer Corps; joined10 Commando 3 troop aka 'X' troop; new identity John Taylor , new Regiment -The Buffs, new s/n 6305478.
 
Serious injuries after an accident with a phosphorous grenade at Littlehampton resulted in his discharge from active service.

Salo Weich, an Austrian of Jewish faith, served in 3 troop, also known as 'X' troop, of the inter allied commando under an alias of Robert Geoffrey Hamilton. He was killed during operations with 41RM Commando at Walcheren.

WEINBERGER, Ernest George

Ernest Weinberger was of the Jewish faith and served in 3 troop, also known as 'X' troop, of the inter allied commando under the alias of Ernest Webster. He was killed in a landing craft with Max Lewinsky [more...] during operations in Normandy on D Day.
